"It's Just Us Starving In the Land of Plenty" tells the adventures and misadventures of a group of expats in Berlin,
What these characters share is the big void of the New Millenium. The strange, sometimes exotic—mostly frightening—feeling of being constantly misplaced, unreachable and unreached.
They meet each other, talk to each other, get to know each other, disappear from each other's existence as though they had never been there in the first place.
They are writers, lovers, artists and DJs coming to terms with being adventurers in hi-fi.
They are dreamers, predators, late-bloomers, torn between the need to identify in order to belong and the inner struggle against labels and rites of passage; loners, allergic to social interactions, disillusioned. They wait, but are philosophically impatient. The place? Berlin. A city like a magnet, where people move to be free to improvise. Where it's hard to commit. One can heal but also hurt. The city that triggers the state of mind in which we conceived this work.
When Margherita enters the American bookstore post-modernly called "Shakespeare in Company", in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, she is ready to break the ice with queer salesclerk/aspiring poet Ellis Whitaker. She can't predict she will fall down like the Titanic, instead. Nor will Karen Fuller—involved with a divorcé thirty years her senior, still editing her documentary about misplacement and origin in order to convince herself that she belongs somewhere—realize how dangerous it is to allow yourself to be caught off guard by feelings in a World where chitchat replaces conversation and experience supplants Thought. And then there's Jonathan Pollard, Himiko Oe, Perry, Olga Spektor, Altea Matsché, Tristan, Annabel Pollard…
'It’s Just Us Starving in the Land of Plenty'
Or, a reflection on the human condition in the era of a globalization devoid of any cultural meaning.
